Cabrera Team Day Out - Delta Force Paintballing 28th November

November 28th we are having a Team day out at Delta Force Paintball in Livingstone. You can find more info about Delta Force by clicking Here

The cost would be £10 each with 100 free Paintballs included in this price. Every 100 Paintballs there after will cost around £7.

As we are getting a decent deal on these tickets you can bring along Family/Friends and we will have a Squad Vs Friends game if possible.

We have a MAXIMUM quota of 50 spaces and this will be taking place sometime in November, Once we find out what date we can have a free Saturday we will confirm.

Silverknowes Vale vs Cabrera Ath - Logan Cup 2nd Round

With the Tinkerman off sunning himself in the South of France and ‘The Special One’ JP Jamieson left in charge for the day Cabrera faced up to their fierce rivals Silverknowes Vale in this Logan Cup tie, still hurting from narrowly missing out on promotion to them by a point at the end of last season.

Forced changes to the team saw Mitchell and Manson return, replacing Robertson and Dodds, the latter enjoying a birthday game of virtual golf and saving his fancy footwork for the dance floor of Why Not later on in the evening. Club captain Ross Allan returned to the starting 11 after injury to replace the suspended Duke and as The Special One continued the Tinkerman’s rotation system of the attack the final change saw Falconer return to the starting line up in place of McLean. Speaking of this change after the game The Special One was quoted “If I have an Aston Martin and a Bentley in the garage and I drive the Aston Martin all the time everyday… well then that is just foolish”

Cabrera’s form has been mixed so far this season but so far results have been good enough to see them to the top of the league, emphasis going into this tie was on the need to up the effort and work rate given that Vale have been enjoying relative success in their new division. While the surface Jack Kane is not always the most suitable for a free-flowing game of football, with the strong winds blowing the team were charged with working hard and keeping the ball down and moving it around at pace to really take the game to their opponents.

With the benefit of this wind in the first half though the Cabrera players all to often opted for the long ball playing right into the hands of the Vale defence who had a clear height advantage over Falconer and Valente. The one thing this did force however was a number of corners as their defence played it safe clearing their lines wherever possible.

With Falconer’s crossing looking dangerous as he continually whipped them right on top of the Vale keeper, the deadlock was eventually broken on twenty minutes and it came direct from such a set-piece. Falconer zinged in a pacy in-swinger from the left wing and the stand-in ale keeper was helpless as it flew past both him and his defence into the net.

While the quality of football was not as desired, the Cabrera work-rate in this half was unquestionable, and again the midfield trio, for this game Thomson, Greenan and Weddell, worked tirelessly, pressing Vale whenever they had the ball and generally dictating the pace of the game. Ross Allan back in the heart of the defence marshalled his team well and Vale never really threatened in this first 45 as they struggled to play against the strong wind.

Half Time: Silverknowes Vale 0 – Cabrera Ath 1

The second half would be a much different proposition as Cabrera now had the added difficulty of playing into the wind against a Vale side keen to fight their way back into this tie.

They quickly made their intentions know knocking balls over the top of the Cabrera defence and causing the rearguard to turn on their heels in a bid to defend this direct play. Recent signing Hammy in goals continued his good form making a couple of fine saves early on, one particular impressive save from a close range one-on-one effort.

The equaliser did eventually arrive and again it was from a set-piece as the wind tormented the Cabrera defence this time round. A corner from the left side again was whipped in and the Vale player rose unmarked to knock home a tidy header past the helpless Hammy who, like the Cabrera sideline, will feel his defence should have done more to thwart this attack.

To be fair this seemed to give the Cabrera players the fright they needed and sparked them to a more urgent approach to the game. As the battle raged on the Vale players began flying into challenges with both Weddell and the team medi-kit coming out on the wrong side of a couple of rather vicious attacks.

Cabrera continued to make chances and with May and Manson looking dangerous on the flanks they began to use the space out on the wings to really test the Vale full-backs on the turn.

The dividends of all this hard-work were eventually reaped when Greenan, attacking a May corner, headed home at the back post to record his third in three competitive games so far this season, a great return from the attacking midfielder so far.

With the game poised delicately at two-one The Special One made changes to close out the game and secure the team’s progression to the next round. The self-proclaimed ‘Cabrera Two’ McGhie and Wood were entered into the play under strict instructions to knuckle down and avoid any of their usual show-boating. Rumour has it that Jamieson was keen to test Wood’s match sharpness after a long lay-off due to injury, however more likely he was just keen to get the pair on the pitch to save them from nipping his head any further on the sidelines.

Dave Lee also made a brief foray onto the pitch but as the referee blew his whistle, on what seemed a very short second 45 he was unable to make much impact on the game.

All in a good stubborn performance from the team and pass marks all round for the lads that made the team. Hopefully the quality that is evident throughout the current squad will allow Cabrera to compete on all fronts this season and a long overdue cup run may well be on the cards.

Barca Milton in the league this coming Saturday will be a huge tie and a real test of our title chasing credentials. Hopefully everyone will be keen to make a good impression at training this Wednesday and prove their worth for a place in the starting eleven.

I have been quoted a few prices for the Newcastle trip and the best so far look like this:

2 Night stay in Premier Inn, Newcastle Central(2 sharing) £70(each)

29 seater from ASA Ladywell Coaches comes in at £520 return, If we fill the Bus it will cost min £17 for players.

Total Cost(travel/accom) = £90(approx)

If any NON Cabrera players/committee wish to come on the trip they will pay £25 deposit which will pay for the bus. Deposit for Players/Staff is £20.

We are doing this to bring down the price for the Players/Staff - This will not change for anyone.

NO DEPOSITS ARE REFUNDABLE REGARDLESS.

Gogs will be taking in the Deposits and you can pay in money for your Balance and ALSO SPENDING MONEY which will be kept and handed to you on Departure if you wish to save up with the club.

Once we have 10 deposits in we will go ahead and book rooms for those that have paid. No deposit, No booking.

If you want to share with anyone I would suggest asking them to pay the deposit at the same time and put your names down together as I am not phoning up 20 times to change names on rooms.

Cabrera Ath v Civil Service Strollers

Cabrera continued their lacklustre start to the season with a hard-fought victory in this Edinburgh East league tie. A last gasp winner from Danny May secured the points for the Cabrera side in a very even encounter that lived up to the age-old cliché of a game of two halves.

With the majority of their league rivals competing in the East of Scotland first, both the sides on show at Saughton 3g having benefitted from a bye, this was a great opportunity for Cabrera to move into pole position in the league and the Tinkerman hope that this would provide the motivation needed to fire the players up for the task at hand. Instead however his side stuttered to a nervy start and found themselves under the cosh early on with poor defending across the pitch shipping a two goal lead to this improved Strollers side.

New signing Hammy making his debut in the sticks for Cabrera was faultless for the goals and would go on to put in an outstanding performance that more than contributed to Cabrera’s victory on the day.

One thing that had improved and will have pleased the Tinkerman was the home sides discipline on the pitch, evidenced by the fact not a single booking was awarded throughout the duration of the game, no doubt aided by the omission of Morrison, Allan and Jamieson, last season’s most decorated sinners, from the starting XI.

When Cabrera did get the ball down they showed that they are a more than capable footballing side and had they stuck to this style of play throughout the game there would be no doubt they are serious contenders for the league title this season. With strength and depth throughout every position on the pitch, competition for places has never been higher and the players currently in the first team will be feeling the pressure to continue performing both on Saturday and at training for fear of finding themselves on the bench over the coming weeks.

As it happened though the second goal from strollers hitting the back of the net was the wake up call that Cabrera needed and with deputy-captain Scott Thomson urging his side on they were able to take the game by the horns pressing for a goal to reduce the defecit before the end of the first 45. The breakthrough did finally come when a long ball from the Cabrera rearguard found Stephen Duke in the box and his clever nod down was thumped into the goal by another new summer signing Adam Valente. With six goals to his name this season Gogs Falconer will be feeling serious pressure to his top goalscorer title, especially as he was sidelined with a foot injury for this game.

This goal was vital as going into the break it gave Cabrera the confidence booster they needed, and you feel that had they went into the second half two down they may not have had the bouncebackability to recover and grab the points.

Half Time: Cabrera Ath 1 – Civil Service Strollers 2

The second half was a much different proposition and was mainly one-way traffic throughout as Cabrera sought the goals they needed to get themselves in front.

Strollers however continued to look dangerous on the break and the Cabrera defence had to be on their toes with Hammy making some excellent saves and Colin Campbell looking particularly tidy at the back (or at least so said Jack McGhie on the sidelines…..Colin watch your back boyo you seem to have an admirer!).

The equaliser did eventually arrive and it was Lee Greenan who pulled the teams level on the 60 minute mark was a close range drive. The tireless centre midfielder by his own admission did not have the best of games and he will be looking to improve on this in coming weeks and hopefully this goal will be the first of many as he seeks to recapture the prolific form he found in pre-season.

As the game ticked on Cabrera spurned a number of opportunities to take the lead, with Greenan, Falconer (on as a sub for McLean) and Duke all missing close range chances. With only five minutes to go there was however a collective sigh of relief from the players and the ever-boisterous sideline when Danny May took advantage of a goalmouth strumash and some indecision from the Strollers defence to poke the ball home past the helpless keeper.

In the end a victory for Cabrera that would see them back to the top of the league going into the September weekend. While the players know they will have to perform better in coming weeks, if they are able to grind out victories on days such as this they will certainly be there or thereabouts at the business end of the season.

Spirits were high as the lads went back to the Kilted Pig bar/restaurant for post-match food and drinks to celebrate their hard=-fought three-points and also an excellent new partnership with the Colinton establishment.

Cabrera Athletic managed to make a stunning £622 from the race night at the Bainfield Bowling Club.

The night was a great success and thanks to everyone for making it a great night, The night couldn't have been a success without all the help of the members of Bainfield who made the Race Night run smoothly.

We leave for Newcastle on Friday 29th from The Laich at Noon, Hopefully arriving at Newbridge Street West Premier Inn for around 3:30pm.

New Training Facilities Confirmed

We are pleased to announce we have secured training facilities for the next 4 Months.

We have confirmed Saughton 3G as our training base, Training will take place every Tuesday @ 8pm-9pm and cost will depend on the bodies that turn up.

Please help make us succesful by turning up each week and this in turn will make sure the club funds are not hit by having to pay out for the pitch when not enough bodies are available.

We are trying our hardest to give the team the best possible Playing & Training facilites in Edinburgh and we like to think we now have these with the confirmation of Saughton 3G for next season.

This should give us a real help in securing promotion next season if results don't go our way in the final week of the season.

The first session will be held on the 19th May and if anyone has Players who wish to come along for next season then this is the chance. Please let the Tinkerman or JP know of any players who want to come along.
